League night
Your first time at
Okay, now we get to the fun stuff. Let’s dive into the meat and potatoes of what to expect every league night.
-
Every week you’ll be required to have 4 players that will play that night… But it’s fun to bring the whole team each week to hang out, help coach during the games, and maybe lend a sub to another team that might not have enough players. Each team can have 4-10 players.
-
Exactly how it sounds! When you come into the building, head to the front desk and let us know your team has arrived. The front desk superstar will then let you know what court you’re playing on and give you words of encouragement to win your match. Checking in helps us run the night smoothly and lets us know if there are any issues that may arise.
-
Subs… No, we aren’t talking about the sandwiches or the naval ships. A sub (or substitute) is a player who volunteers to play for another team that may not have enough players. Now, there are some rules that go along with this… So pay attention! You can only sub for a team if you are:
Not playing that night for your own team
Have not already subbed for a team that night. In the simplest form, you can only play once a night.
In the simplest form, you can only play once a night. You are also required to at least have half of your own teammates playing. So, only 2 subs are allowed per team.
-
Alright folks. You’ve checked in, have 4 players, and are down on the court ready to play. Now what? Get ready to play two 8-frame games. The same two players will play the entire game, and the same goes for the other two players for the second game. NO SWITCHING PLAYERS DURING GAMES.
In both games, the yellow biscuits will always start the game off, but then you’ll alternate with your opponent after that. We usually dash the score boards to help out. But just in case, the shooting order for each frame goes: yellow, black, black, yellow, yellow, black, black, yellow.
Game 1: You’ll flip a coin or play rock paper scissors with your opponent. Whoever wins gets to choose what color they want to play in game 1. Once it’s decided, you’ll stand on your appropriate sides and do a down-and-back practice round. Remember, those same players will play all eight frames of the game. After the game is over, shake hands with your opponent and leave the court.
Game 2: Now, the other 2 players of your team will head down to the court and play the opposite color your team played in the first game. (If you played yellow in game 1 then you’ll play black for game 2.) Keep in mind, the biscuits never change sides…only the people. Just like game 1, the players get a down-and-back practice and will play the entire 8 frames.
Tie-Game: If either game is tied after 8 frames, you will add two more frames to that game with the same players. Basically making it a 10-frame game and continuing to follow the same shooting pattern. Keep doing this until someone wins!
-
We allow players to be coached by their other teammates. We even encourage it. But we do not allow players to walk across the court to coach (also known as cross-court coaching). This means players can have one teammate next to them giving advice on how to play. The area gets a bit crowded, so we only allow one coach or teammate down on the courts. Other players must stand behind the rails. If you need to walk across the court to get the score or see a disc, please be aware of other players on other courts shooting. DO NOT stand in the middle of the court talking to your teammate. This is not allowed!
-
Congratulations! You won your first game! But oh no, you just couldn’t get the W on the second game. So now what do you do? If it comes down to this, what we do is called a “4-frame all play”. This means everyone that played will shoot one frame each. The order stays the same (yellow, black, black, yellow).
If you played game one, you will come back out, stand where you stood before, and shoot where you shot. Once your frame is over, the people who played in game 2 will come out and finish it up with the last two frames. Again, they will stand where they stood and shot where they shot. THIS MEANS YOU CHANGE COLORS AFTER THE SECOND FRAME. Don’t let it confuse you, it sounds harder than it is. Whatever color you played in your game, that’s the color you will play in your 1-frame overtime game. After 4 frames, the winner should be decided.
Double overtime: If the game is still tied after the 4-frame all play, you will now go into double overtime. This is simply cutting in half what you just did. Instead of 4 frames, only the players who played in game 1 will come out and shoot a down and back 2-frame. You will still stand where you stood and shoot where you shot and continue the shooting order as if it was a regular game (yellow, black).
Triple overtime: Guess what happens next? You got it! Game two players will come out and try and finish this thing up! Same as double overtime rules except, again, you’ll be switching colors due to following the color you played in the original game 2 (black, yellow).

Whether we are happy or sad, the results of the match must be reported at the front desk so we can stay on top of the leaderboards. Once the match is over, shake hands with your new friends and have someone go up to the front desk and let us know if you won or lost. We do not need to know the score, just the outcome of the match. Once you report the results, feel free to meet back at the bar and take some victory (or better luck next time) shots.
-
Even though we know you’ll want to stay until the bar closes every week, we try not to keep people at the club later than they want to–or can–be. Babysitters aren’t cheap in this economy! Because of that, we have a strict 15-minute window before we call the match in favor of the team that showed up. If you start at 6:30 you have until 6:45 to check in and get down to the appropriate court.
If you know one or two of your teammates are running a little late, that’s okay. You can start the first game without the entire team present. Just be sure they are there to start the second game on time. They have 5 minutes from the end of the first game to get down on the court. We also know life can be crazy and things happen. If you aren't going to make it and are forced to forfeit, try and let us know via email ahead of time.
Playoffs
holy sh*t, you made it to
You’ve done it! You finished the 8-week season and have made it to the shuffleboard playoffs! Good for you! But wait… What are the playoffs?
-
Week 8 of the league is the final week of the season before playoffs (also known as tiebreaker week). Be warned that matches might get a late start this week due to said tiebreakers. We use Speed Shuffle to determine tie-breakers.
-
In the event of a speed shuffle, each team will choose 1 player to participate. That player will shoot all 8 biscuits with the goal of scoring the most possible points. The person in charge of running the speed shuffle will yell out “1 2 3 SHOOT!” Once SHOOT is said, each player, or shooter, must shoot their biscuit. You cannot wait and think about the shot.
The objective is to get as many biscuits as you can on the board that are scoring. But wait, there’s a twist! The kitchen, which is usually negative ten, now becomes a positive ten! What!? Crazy right!? So during speed shuffle your only enemy is the lines! You can shoot any color biscuit at any given time. This means you don't have to shoot Y/B/B/Y or Y/Y/Y/Y/B/B/B/B. They do, however, all have to start in the kitchen as usual. Fun right?
-
The Sunday after the last week of regular play. Doors open at 12PM and play starts at 1PM.
-
Hopefully your team!
Our playoffs consist of 32 teams. Top 4 teams from each division will advance to the playoffs!
-
The way we run our playoffs is pretty simple and super fun! Each cabana (8 in total) will have 4 teams each. We call this the round robin style play. Kind of like soccer club style. Each team will play a single 8-frame game against the other 3 teams in their group. The top 2 teams from each cabana (or group) will then advance to the sweet sixteen bracket.
From there, the play reverts back to each team playing two 8-frame games. We then go on to the elite 8 and then down to the final 4. Once the final 4 teams have been decided, we end for the night and pick back up the next day for the championship! Also known as BANQUET!!! Now that was just the skeleton outline of how the playoffs work. Maybe we should get into some of the rules.
-
For the round robin style of play, each team will play three single 8-frame games. The team with the higher seeding (rank) gets to determine what color they are for each game. During this stage, each team only needs 2 players. That’s right, if you want to play with the same 2 players for all three games, you can! This doesn’t mean you have to though. You can play with 2 new players each game if you like. You can do the same two players for game 1 and 3 but a different 2 players for game 2. It’s totally up to you. You CANNOT however, switch players in the middle of a game.
Once a game has started, those same players must play the entire game. Shooting order will remain Y/B/B/Y/Y/B/B/Y but teams will switch colors after frame 4. This means if you choose yellow first, you will shoot yellow the first 4 frames and then move over and finish the game shooting black. This is the same for all 3 round robin games. As mentioned, the top 2 teams from each group will advance to the bracket play. If there is a tie for first, the head to head match up winner gets the higher seed. If there is a tie in a group to see who advances, we will use speed shuffle to decide who advances. Practice your speed shuffle people!
Bracket play rules: From this point on it’s regular league night rules. You must have 4 players, flip a coin to choose color, switch players and colors after game 1. If there’s a tie, it’s a 4-frame tie breaker. JUST LIKE LEAGUE NIGHT PLAY. Nothing different.
-
Here’s some other important stuff…
Let’s say you played in a round robin but didn’t advance. And let’s say another team has advanced but only has 3 players. Can you sub for that team? NO. Once you have played for a team, that is your team for that day. If you are one of those players who has two teams in the playoffs, you must choose a team. Now, if you do not play in the round robin style of play for either team, and one advances, you can play for that team.
Once you play a game for one of those teams...that is your team. If you play in round robin for team 1 but only team 2 advances, you can help coach that team, just not play. If team 2 advances to Monday, we will allow you to play, but only if we deem you an active teammate on that team. This means you have participated and played on that team throughout the season and you aren't just an alternate or “super” sub. This is all up to the Royal Palms staff to determine. What Royal Palms says, goes.
